Fisheries Resources

Fisheries ResourcesFisheries resources represent a key component of any baseline assessment related to mining and exploration activities. Numerous Provincial and Federal regulatory agencies require a thorough understanding of the fisheries resources in the vicinity of a project; as well as how the proposed development and related infrastructure may impact the environment prior to permitting a project. DST has many years of experience in design, and execution of comprehensive fisheries assessment programs to support mining clients through every stage of the project life cycle such as:

  • Baseline data collection during the exploration phase of a project,
  • Developing mitigation strategies during construction and operation phases, and
  • Execution of monitoring and rehabilitation programs at the closure phase

DST has a highly experienced team of fisheries and aquatic scientists who work closely with clients to meet the specific needs of a project, and liaise with regulatory agencies to ensure provincial and federal regulations are adhered to. Our experienced staff are able to complete assessment programs in remote locations across the country and assist our clients with characterizing the fisheries resources in both marine and freshwater systems.

DST’s Fisheries Resources Services include:

  • Fish community assessment using a wide variety of techniques such as:
    • gill netting
    • trap netting
    • trawling
    • electrofishing
    • Baited remote underwater video
    • Identification/Taxonomy
  • Stock assessments and population health analysis;
  • Toxicology
  • Fish Habitat Mapping
  • Bathymetric Surveys
  • Acoustic Tagging
  • Fish habitat compensation planning
  • Design of mitigation measures

DST recognizes that each project is unique and works directly with clients to identify the most suitable and cost effective techniques for their site.
