Ontario Power Generation / SNC Lavalin, Lac Seul, Ontario
Ontario Power Generation wanted to optimize its Ear Falls Generation Station by adding a new unit to annually generate more than 50 million kilowatt hours of reliable clean hydroelectricity.
DST provided extensive civil and geotechnical engineering, blasting and outdoor environmental services.
DST was retained to provide quality control service for construction of the major project elements: the intake structure, power tunnel, draft tube, tailrace and powerhouse. Responsibilities included geotechnical engineering and instrumentation, drilling, concrete field and laboratory testing, thermocouple installation and concrete temperature analysis, form work, rebar and steel inspection, construction surveying, pressure testing, rock anchor inspection and pull out testing. DST completed this work through challenging timelines and winter weather where 24 hour shifts and on-site temperatures of -40o were a regular occurrence. Additional tasks included specialty assignments for environmental site remediation, blast engineering and vibration monitoring.
A new sustainable and green power asset for OPG, with its quality assured.
